Let's practice length exercises!
Hello guys! In today’s post I am going to talk about length and how to work with it in a classroom.
First of all, length is a physic magnitude which we measure the distance between two points with. Its principal unit of measure is the metre but it is composed by this units:
This is the metre scale, we use this as stairs because it is more visual and easy to remember for the kids. Each step is a change of measure, when the steps are for going up, the measure loses quantity but when the steps are for going down, the measure acquires quantity. In order to understand this scale, kids only have to think as if they were going up or down stairs, this way they will easily remember the different calculations that they have to carry out.
In order to practise length exercises, here you can find some examples depending on the difficulty level:
Level 1:
Peter’s pencil measures 15 centimetres. Ana’s pencil measures 10 centimeters. How much longer is Pedro’s pencil than Ana’s?
A rope is 1 meter long. If you cut off 40 centimeters, how many centimeters are left?
A toy worm is 25 centimeters long. If it stretches 10 cm more, how long is it now?
Level 2:
A swimming pool is 12 meters long and 6 meters wide. What is the total length around the pool?
A child has a 2-meter-long jump rope. If it breaks into 4 equal pieces, how long is each piece in centimeters?
One path in the park is 3 meters and 45 centimeters long. Another is 4 meters and 20 centimeters long. What is their total length if joined together?
Level 3:
Marta has a ribbon that is 2 meters long. She cuts 75 cm to wrap a gift and another 80 cm to decorate. How much ribbon does she have left?
One tree trunk is 2 meters and 35 centimeters tall. Another is 1 meter and 65 centimeters tall. What is the difference in height between the two trunks?
These exercises consist of adding and subtracting different numbers, the key goal of this texts is reading and comprehending. Also it is very important to know how to move from one unit to another as the most essential aspects is to learn that two different units cannot be added or subtracted.
Here you can access to a video that gives you some tricks in order to convert the different measures:
That is all for today! I hope this activities are useful for you.
