When did geometry appear?

Hello guys! As my first post, I will give you some information about geometry origins :).

Geometry appeared because of the studies of mathematicians in order to understand shapes or space measures. This primitive type of geometry emerged in the ancient Egyptian civilisation, Babylon and it was improved by the Greek population. In the sixth century B.C, a mathematician called Pythagoras, started to develop different types of laws that explained a huge number of questions such as Pythagoras theorem. This theorem shows that the squared hypotenuse of a right triangle is equal to the sum of its remaining sides squared.

Euclides was a Greek mathematician who wrote a book about polygons, circles and their three-dimensional figures. The book was called The elements and this text has been a geometry reference through history until nowadays.

The first geometry problems were introduced as the population needed to find out solutions in order to have an effective building construction. Greek population studies lines, curves, different types of polygons and also they started to create some ways to achieve the areas of different figures.

Here in this video you can access to more information about the origin of geometry:

As a curiosity, Greek population did not have any instruments in order measure the different figures or spaces that they needed to so they had

different measures units:

  • Daktylos was equivalent to the width of one finger.

  • Kondylos was equivalent to the width of two fingers.

  • Palame was equivalent to the width a hand

  • Pechys was equivalent to the distance from the elbow to the hand.

  • Pous was equivalent to a foot.

What do you think about these primitive measure units?

I hope you have learnt more about geometry in this first post, I will see you soon!!
